Overview:

Borno state is a highly conservative and patriarchal society. Patriarchy is an ideology and belief system in most societies that asserts the superiority of all males to all females; that arranges the fundamental inequality in a hierarchal order that continues to privilege men at the expense of women and manifests in all spheres of life. It informs the norms, practices, policies and rules and regulations and hence most of these favor men. In Nigeria, patriarchy remains a key obstacle to women’s participation and gender equality. The power imbalance arising from patriarchy drives GBV that occurs in the life of women in ‘peace’ times and much more during violent conflicts. The Boko Haram insurgency in north east Nigeria has seen an astronomical increase in various forms of GBV/VAWGs among IDPs and violation of their rights and concomitant trauma. It was against this background that this project is being implemented with the goal of enhancing the knowledge and capacity of various act
